After graduating from Savannah High School, Pete enlisted in the United States Air Force where he trained in Communications. He also worked covertly as an intelligence officer and was a trained bomb disposal expert. Stoney received his early childhood and middle school education in the segregated Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah in the early to late 1960s to the 1970s. He would later attend and graduate from Benedictine Military School in 1975. Here, Stoney was a member of the Cadet Football and Basketball teams.

She was born November 26, 1946 in Savannah to the late James and Margie Cribbs Whalen. Mary retired from Candler Hospital after more than 20 years of service. She was a member of Wilmington Island United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Eugene Gradick.
